Maddie — Clyde's fiancée — spotted the stone while we were designing her Stellaris engagement ring. She bought it for him on the spot. A Montana parti sapphire in a shield shape, carrying both yellow and deep blue in a single stone. The kind of find that makes a ring.
The Stone: A Montana Parti Sapphire Shield
Montana sapphires are among the most coveted in the world — mined domestically, with a distinctive cool, steely quality that sets them apart from their Australian or Sri Lankan counterparts. This one is a parti sapphire, meaning it carries more than one color simultaneously: yellow and deep blue shifting through the stone depending on the light and angle. In a shield cut — a five-sided geometric shape with a pointed base — it has real presence and an almost heraldic quality that suits a man who lives outdoors and isn't interested in blending in.
The Design: Complementary, Not Matching
Maddie's Stellaris ring features radiating lines — and I wanted Clyde's band to share that design language without copying it. The solution was a wide band with carved geometric lines that radiate outward from the center stone in a chevron-like pattern, layered to create depth and visual texture. Same spirit, different execution. The stone sits in a full bezel — extra secure for a mountain lifestyle — and the whole ring is cast in 10k yellow gold, chosen for its durability and its softer tone over 14k.
A velvety satin finish throughout keeps the shine understated — present but not loud, which is exactly right for a ring this substantial.
The Result
Clyde and Maddie's rings share a design vocabulary without sharing a look. Hers is delicate and celestial. His is bold and architectural. Together they are like them — made for each other, but entirely their own.
