A Vintage Soul, a Parti Sapphire, and a Beach Proposal — Nick & Kaylin's Story

Nick reached out to us from Portland, Maine with a Pinterest board, a budget, and a very clear sense of the person he was designing for.

What followed was one of those commissions where everything comes together — the right stone, the right references, the right amount of creative trust — and the result is a ring that couldn't have existed any other way.

The Love Story Behind the Design

Nick knew exactly what Kaylin loved. A Pinterest board full of hand engraving, rectangular center stones, wider bands, Art Deco lines, lower profiles, half bezels, and celestial touches told us everything we needed to know. Kaylin is someone who appreciates craftsmanship, who notices the details, who would look at every inch of a ring and want each one to mean something.

Nick didn't just want to buy a ring. He wanted to build one worthy of her.

The Inspiration

Kaylin's board had a clear through-line: vintage elegance with an edge. Art Deco geometry, hand-engraved surfaces, stones that do something unexpected in the light. The brief called for a ring that felt genuinely antique in its craft but completely considered in its design — nothing arbitrary, nothing decorative for decoration's sake.

We began, as we always do, with the stone.

Design Elements & Their Intent

  • Hand engraving throughout: Linear, precise, and deeply Art Deco — the engraving gives the band a texture that catches light differently at every angle, rewarding the kind of person who looks closely.
  • Octagonal bezel setting: A nod to the geometric rigour of the 1920s, framing the parti sapphire with strong, architectural lines that echo the stone's own facet pattern.
  • Milgrain detailing: The fine beaded edge running throughout is a hallmark of vintage craftsmanship — present everywhere, visible only to those who look.
  • Angular diamond side stones: Set into the engraved shoulders, they add sparkle without interrupting the band's vintage rhythm.
  • Hidden detail on the side profile: The band is low enough to feel wearable, but tall enough to carry a hidden element in the side profile — a quiet reward for Kaylin to discover.

The Stone: A Brett Kosnar Parti Sapphire Star fantasy cut

The centre stone is an Australian parti sapphire, cut in an emerald cut Star fantasy cut by lapidary Brett Kosnar — and it is extraordinary.

Parti sapphires are stones that carry more than one color simultaneously — in this case, a deep blue that bleeds into yellow-green depending on the light and the angle. No two parti sapphires are alike, and the color zoning in this stone is particularly dramatic: part deep sea, part forest canopy, shifting between the two as it moves.

The star cut amplifies all of it. Kosnar's signature faceting style sends radiating lines of light outward from the stone's centre in a starburst pattern, making the color shifts even more alive and dynamic. When Nick saw it, he knew immediately. It was Kaylin's stone.

The Design Process

After our initial Zoom consultation, we developed four distinct designs — each pulling from different combinations of Kaylin's Pinterest references. Nick responded to elements from two of them, so we merged the strongest details from each: the engraving pattern from one, the bezel geometry from another, the band proportions refined from there.

Band width was a careful negotiation. Wide enough to carry the engraving and feel substantial alongside a statement stone, but not so wide that it stopped reading as an engagement ring. We landed on a width that sits with authority without overwhelming the hand — and left just enough height in the profile to tuck a hidden detail into the side.

Materials That Matter

  • 14k yellow gold: Warm and rich, it deepens the green and gold tones in the parti sapphire while grounding the Art Deco engraving in something genuinely vintage-feeling.
  • Australian parti sapphire, Brett Kosnar star fantasy cut: Ethically sourced, color-zoned blue to yellow-green, and cut with a precision that makes the stone perform rather than simply sit.
  • White diamonds: Conflict-free, set into the engraved shoulders — their cool white light plays beautifully against the warm gold and the parti stone's shifting tones.

The Final Piece

The finished ring is a study in considered restraint. Every surface is engraved. Every line is intentional. The parti sapphire sits within its octagonal bezel like something that has always belonged there, shifting from deep blue to electric green depending on the light. Milgrain edges catch the sun in a way that makes the whole piece glow.

Nick proposed to Kaylin on the beach in Maine. She said yes. And the ring, she told him, was exactly what she had always dreamed of.

Their Words

"The proposal went great and Kaylin was absolutely blown away by the ring. A ton of people have been commenting on it. It's very special."

— Nick

"This ring is genuinely the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. I can't believe it's mine and I get to wear it forever. Such a unique piece and something that will remain in our family for generations."

— Kaylin

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a parti sapphire?

A parti sapphire is a sapphire that displays more than one color simultaneously — typically blue alongside yellow, green, or teal. The color zoning is natural and unique to each stone, making every parti sapphire completely one of a kind.

What is a star fantasy cut?

A star fantasy cut is a faceting style created by master lapidary Dalan Hargrave. It produces a dramatic starburst of radiating light from within the stone. Brett Kosnar is among the skilled cutters who work in this style, bringing extraordinary life to colored stones.

Can I design a ring with hand engraving and Art Deco details?

Absolutely. Hand engraving, milgrain, geometric bezels, and Art Deco-inspired details are all part of our custom vocabulary. We design from your references outward, combining elements until the ring is entirely yours.

How does the custom design process work?

We begin with a consultation — in person or over Zoom — where we talk through your inspiration, preferences, stone ideas, and budget. From there we develop design concepts, refine them together, and bring the final piece to life. Custom projects typically take 6–8 weeks from consultation to delivery.
