Designing for Someone You Know Well

From the jewelry photos Jared sent, the picture came together quickly. She is outdoorsy and petite, into yoga and nature, with a bohemian aesthetic and a genuine love of color. She also works in a corporate environment — which means the ring needed to do two things at once: express who she really is, including the tattoos and the free-spirited sensibility that doesn't always have a place at the office, while still being practical and wearable enough to never come off.

The brief, in short: bohemian soul, practical bones, and a stone with real color.

The Stone: A Fantasy Cut Blue-Green Sapphire

Jared was immediately drawn to fantasy sapphire cuts — and for this brief, they were the perfect solution. Fantasy cuts are a style of precision lapidary work that carves facets into the stone in ways that go far beyond traditional cutting — geometric patterns, starbursts, and radiating lines that catch light from within in an almost otherworldly way. The result is a stone that looks alive, complex, and unlike anything produced by conventional faceting.

There's a practical advantage too: fantasy cut stones are flat on the back. That means when set, they sit low on the finger — closer to the hand, less likely to catch on things, and far more comfortable for someone who uses her hands. For a yoga practitioner and outdoor enthusiast, this matters.

The stone Jared chose is a blue-green-yellow parti sapphire — deep teal shifting into yellow-green depending on the light. It moves between the two like something out of a tide pool, dark and oceanic one moment, alive and forest-lit the next.

Design Elements & Their Intent

• Minimal half bezel: Hugs the stone at the tips, protecting the points of the marquise shape while keeping the profile low and the stone fully visible. Practical without sacrificing presence.
• Tight twist band: Organic, fluid, and quietly bohemian — the twist gives the band movement and a nature-inspired sensibility without leaning into anything overtly decorative.
• Round diamond cluster side stones: Small, bright, and gathered in tight clusters on either side of the setting. They add sparkle without adding height, keeping the whole ring wearable and low-profile.
• 14k yellow gold: Warm against the blue-green stone, the gold deepens the teal and brings out the yellow-green shifts in the fantasy cut. It also reads naturally alongside the organic twist of the band

The Design Process

We developed three designs for Jared, all working within the boho-nature-free spirit direction the jewelry photos had pointed us toward. He responded to elements from more than one, so we combined them — the tight twist band from one, the cluster side stones from another, the minimal half bezel refined from there until the proportions were right for a petite hand.

The result is a ring that looks like it grew rather than was designed — organic and considered at the same time.

The Final Piece

The finished ring is everything the brief called for. Low profile, practical, and utterly distinctive. The blue-green fantasy sapphire sits close to the hand in its half bezel, the fantasy cut alive with light from every angle. The twist band keeps it grounded in something natural. The diamond clusters add the sparkle that lifts it into something special.

Jared proposed while I was away in Europe — and they even stopped in during those same two weeks. I got the full report when I returned: it had gone exactly as hoped.
