Some rings begin with a stone. This one began with a willow tree.

When Ashley first found Bohemi through a Pinterest deep dive, she wasn't just browsing rings. She was searching for a jeweler who could translate a whole person—their partner Dimitri—into metal and stone. An ecologist. A philosopher. A banjo player. Someone who gifts pinecones because their partner's name, in Korean, means pine tree.

What followed was one of the most layered, intentional custom commissions we've ever had the honor of bringing to life. The result? A ring that looks like forest gnomes made it deep in the woods. Like it was forged in the fires of Mordor and left at the base of a willow tree to be found by someone who would know exactly what it meant.

The Love Story Behind the Design

Ashley described Dimitri the way only someone deeply in love can—every detail vivid, every quirk cherished. An ecologist who wanders forests and carries remnant branches from their childhood willow tree. A bourbon enthusiast, playing songs by campfires, someone with an ash tree tattooed on their arm—fittingly poetic, given the name of the person they love.

Ashley didn't ask for a ring from a catalogue. She handed us a portrait of a person and said: make something worthy of them.

The Inspiration

The direction was clear from the first conversation: this ring needed to feel as though it had grown rather than been made. It had to carry the weight of old forests and old magic. It had to be rugged enough for an ecologist who lives outdoors, dramatic enough for a Dark Souls devotee, and deeply personal enough to carry years of shared meaning.

Willow trees became the spine of the design. Symbolically potent in Celtic tradition and deeply personal to Dimitri—they still have branches from their childhood home's willow—the weeping willow offered everything: fluidity, strength, grace, and the particular quality of things that bend without breaking.

Ashley put it simply: "The more original, artistic, and unique the ring the BETTER." Dimitri had once mused that it would be extraordinary if a jeweler took an actual branch or leaf and used it to form a ring. We took that as a challenge.

Symbolic Motifs & Meaning

• Willow branches: The band twists in multiple interlocking willow branches—wild, organic, impossible to trace to a beginning or end. A symbol of resilience, and of a love that grows in all directions.
• Talon prongs: Six aggressive claw prongs grip the stone like something alive. Fierce, sharp, and unapologetically dramatic—channelling the natural world and the dark fantasy aesthetic Dimitri loved.
• Green sapphires: Scattered through the band like dew drops or forest gems, echoing Dimitri's love of green and the ecological world they inhabit.
• Champagne diamonds: Warm, earthy, and unconventional—stones that feel found rather than manufactured, like something discovered on the forest floor.
• Inside the band-Hidden from the world: a triskele, the ancient Celtic symbol of eternal motion. A quiet nod to Dimitri's roots, and to the idea that some things never truly end.

The Stone: A Starbrite™ Cut by John Dyer

At the center of this ring lives something genuinely rare: an asymmetrical freeform Starbrite™ cut sapphire by master lapidary John Dyer, in a luminous light green.

The Starbrite™ cut is John Dyer's signature creation—a faceting style that produces an extraordinary starburst of light from within the stone, with long, radiating lines that shift and pulse with movement. No two Starbrite™ stones are identical. This one, in its soft, glassy green, carries the quality of light filtered through a forest canopy—alive, shifting, never quite the same twice.

Its freeform asymmetry is part of its beauty. It doesn't conform to a standard shape, which makes it the perfect centre for a ring that doesn't conform to anything standard either.

The Design Process

Ashley gave us something rare: complete creative trust. That kind of trust demands something of a designer—it asks you to truly listen before you ever pick up a tool.

We began with the willow. The band was sculpted to twist and interlock organically, each branch distinct but inseparable from the whole, textured by hand to feel bark-worn and real. Green sapphires and champagne diamonds were set into the branches like natural inclusions, as though they had always been there.

Ashley wanted talons. We delivered six claw prongs that grip the Starbrite sapphire with something between protectiveness and ferocity. The satin finish throughout softens it just enough—ancient-feeling, like it was waiting to be found rather than made.

The Final Piece

The finished ring looks like it was grown, not cast. The band is a tangle of willow branches—textured, twisted, alive. Green sapphires and champagne diamonds catch the light between the branches like sun through leaves. The Starbrite™ sapphire at the centre pulses with that signature starburst, its light green shifting from glassy to deep depending on how it moves. Six talon prongs hold it in place with the quiet confidence of something that will never let go.

It is rugged and magical and eye-catching. It belongs in a forest, or a fantasy, or on the hand of an ecologist-philosopher-banjo player who has been loved, specifically and completely, by someone who paid very close attention.
